Walk on the High Line

IMG_7731v2

Here’s Part II of our little girl’s weekend in NYC.  Sunday, we got bagels at the best place in the city.  And yes, you can quote me on that.  We then ventured into Manhattan to do a little shopping and take a walk on the High Line.  For those of you who have never been, this park was built on top of an old abandoned elevated train track and runs down Manhattan’s West Side.  It’s so unique, and provides wonderful views of the city.  It was a gorgeous day, and I think the girls enjoyed it!

Today brings a doc appointment and my 2nd to last photography class.  Hoping for a good report on the first and to learn as much as I can during the latter.

Crazy enough, we have a trip to Boston coming up on Friday for a dear friend’s wedding.  It still breaks my heart that people could purposefully cause harm to so many innocent others.  I am still praying for all of those in Boston that were affected by this horrible madness.   I am looking forward to the wedding and hoping it will bring some happiness and light to the Boston area.  In the midst of this tragedy, it’s nice to know there is still some love out there.

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Skulls Meet Spring

IMG_7653

It was a beautiful weekend, and I had the pleasure of hosting two of my favorite Baltimore blondes at our place on Saturday.  We spent the day galavanting around Brooklyn and Manhattan…brunch at The Farm, followed by a day of shopping in Soho, & gelato and hot chocolate in Little Italy.  Much to our surprise, we came home with our wallets full and bag-less.  If you know us, you know this is not normal.  However, it was probably for the best.  We had planned to go out on the town that night, but we ended up passing out early from all the walking around we did.

The flowers in these photos make me happy, because it’s actually starting to feel and look like Spring around here!  We also thought it was a nice bright contrast to my dark and stormy outfit.

Last night, the hubby and I went to see one of our favorite indie rock singer-songwriters perform, Matt Costa.  Let me tell you, this man is talented.  He plays the piano, harmonica, three different guitars, and has a voice that will make you melt.  His laid back style is very inviting and his tunes range in variety from bluegrass, folk, rock, and more.  Some of my personal favorites include: Miss Magnolia, Sunshine, & Mr. Pitiful.  He also has a lot of good tracks on his new album.  Check out some of his videos here.

Tonight, I am treating myself to a little mani-pedi with the other NY Alpha Phi Alums, and I cannot wait.  It will be the first pedi of the season, and boy do I need it!

On a heavier note, I am glad that my friends and family in Boston are safe and sound.  I am praying for all those who were affected by this tragedy.  I will never understand it, and it saddens me.  Sending love to Boston today.

Gina

{9} Lately…

lately9

Lately I’ve been…

reading  Just finished The Power of Habit, by Charles Duhigg which I strongly recommend to everyone.  Currently reading The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown.  It’s decent so far.

writing  A birthday card for a special someone.

listening  I’ve got a Mumford & Sons station on Pandora at the moment.  Fun tunes from Passion Pit, Cold War Kids, MGMT and the likes.

thinking  About the fact that Tissycole and Lisa are coming to visit tomorrow!!!  Super excited!

smelling  The rain.  Is it weird that I could smell it before it even started coming down?

watching  The always fabulous Rachel Zoe Project.  Dying over the fashion weekly.  Also just started watching the Real World Portland.  Yes, I still watch the Real World.

wishing  For sunshine.  We were so spoiled at the beginning of the week with warm temperatures, and I’m wishing for them back this weekend!

hoping  That the laundry will do itself.  No?  Not possible?  Oh well, I tried.

wearing   My “Amaze” sweater from ASOS (now on sale!) with an Old Navy poly button-down underneath.  Black skinny jeans from Motherhood.  Leopard print rain boots similar to these.  Red Haute lip from Lancome.

loving  I never realized how much you can love someone you have never even met.  So excited for my baby boy to get here in September, and so in love already.

laughing  At the fact I actually tried to straighten my hair this morning.  The hair in the photo above lasted all of 2 minutes as I stepped out into the wind and rain this morning.  You know those days where your umbrella decides to flip itself out over and over again?  Did wonders for my hair today.

wanting  To finish the friendship bracelet I started making over a month ago.  My 4th grade skills just aren’t where they used to be…

needing  To paint my nails tonight.  They are in dire need of some Essie love.

feeling  Excited for the girls to get here this weekend!  Can’t wait for a weekend of shopping, photographing and girl talk.

craving  Strangely enough, I am not getting any weird pregnancy cravings.   I mean, I want ice cream…but I always want ice cream.  Nothing new.  I haven’t started liking condiments, so I think my appetite is relatively the same.

clicking  Through fashion blogs of expecting mamas.  Trying to figure out some tricks to looking chic while prego.

What have you been up to lately?

Happy Friday!

Love,

Gina

Kiss Me I’m Irish!

IMG_7097

Hope everyone had a HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!!!  Being half Irish, this holiday always means a bit more to me than the typical American “let’s get wasted” mentality.  I make sure to call my off-the-boat Irish Granny to wish her a great day as well as my mother, sister, aunt, and uncle.  I dream of my roots, and wish to someday actually visit Ireland.  Of course, I also usually take part in the fun festivities as well, but obviously this year was a bit low key!  This weekend, I ended up going to church instead of the bar, hung out with my guy and some friends, went shopping for new clothes (that fit–yay!), and of course, still sported some green in my attire.  It was a nice switch up to St. Paddy’s Day this year.

In addition, my photography class assignment this week was to do self-portraits.  Ahhh!!!  Scary!  Definitely out of my comfort zone, but it was good for me to actually take my tripod out of the box and learn how to set it up.  I decided why not use this as an opportunity to learn how to take my own blog outfit photos if I get in a crunch or the hubby is unavailable.  I was limited in my ability in the sense that I could only do the landscape set up (as opposed to the long-ways portrait set up) with the tripod.  It was also difficult to focus the lens without having anything to focus on, so I had my hubby stand in for me while I focused, and then I mind-marked the position he was standing so I knew where to go.  Trust there was a lot of trial and error, blurry shots, etc.  But I eventually ended up with a few shots that I was satisfied with.  Of course, you are your own biggest critic.  To be the subject AND the photographer at the same time was something very new and different for me.  However, I am glad I was presented with this challenge as it ended up making me more confident in my abilities.

Dinner Party

IMG_6864v2

There’s nothing like an impromptu Saturday night dinner party!  I broke out the fine china (for only the second time in two years…let’s just say was about time to put those amazing wedding gifts to good use), and whipped up a little Italiano meal for the hubs and my friends Brooke (a new Brooklynite) and Kendel (visiting from Baltimore).  Pasta with red sauce, breaded chicken, mixed green salad, and a bottle of red (or maybe two bottles of red).  Doesn’t get much better than that huh?  Except for maybe the little game of “Flip Coaster” we invented after dinner.  Don’t even get me started on how insanely good Brooke is at this game–she put us all to shame.  We had so much fun that we completely lost track of time, and the fact that we were supposed to be meeting friends out in Manhattan that night.  Zack ended up crashing, but the girls and I rallied for a fun little night at the Back Room on the Lower East Side.  The Back Room is a swank little speakeasy that serves cocktails in teacups and beer bottles in paper bags.  We had a great time, and I’m thinking we will need to have a repeat date sometime soon!

Girl’s Weekend

408513_10101527592703828_1002230683_n

Oh how I love my girls!!!  A couple weeks ago, some of my besties from Maryland came to visit for a fun Brooklyn weekend.  The hubby went out of town, so this was actually the first time I had a real girl’s weekend at our place.  It was honestly such a blast.  I love spending time with my favorites.  There is never any drama.  Never any bullshit.  Just plain old fun.  It was really great to have a bunch of girls around to borrow clothes from and talk about make up and hair and just get dressed up.  After living with my man for so long now, I sometimes start to miss those girly things that come with having females for roommates!  It was also great to just have them there to snuggle and have deep conversations about life face-to-face rather than on the phone or through e-mail.  I had such a great time, that I already want to start planning our next girly adventure together.

This little photo session was captured by my amazing cousin, Marisa of Misa*Me Photography.  Unfortunately, she never made it to the other side of the lens, but the fact that these photos were taken are proof enough that she was there with us as well!  This documents our little Saturday at DiFara Pizza and walking around my neighborhood.  What you don’t see is the 90’s dance party that we got into later that night, but I have to leave something to the imagination, right?

{5} Lately…

Meg Gi
My friend Meg and me over the weekend at OxCart Tavern in my ‘hood.

Lately I’ve been…

reading  Onto Book 5 of the Harry Potter series.  Making my way…

writing  Some e-mails to folks in the advertising community.

listening  Another hit from one of my favorite collaborators, David Guetta and Sia. Check out “She Wolf (Falling to Pieces).”

thinking  That is it very frigid out there!!!  Brr…hat, gloves, and a scarf are a must in this weather.

smelling  Yankee Candle “Soft Blanket.”  My new favorite scent.

watching  My boss and I are currently partaking in a “Race to the Oscars.”  Our goal is to watch all of the films nominated for Best Picture before the big event.  So far, I have seen two out of nine.

wishing  That I hadn’t caught this cold over the weekend.  I spent my entire day off yesterday sick on the couch.  Hence my lack of a blog post yesterday.  Today, I am still sick and working from home.

hoping  That we can plan another girl’s weekend soon, because that one was SO MUCH FUN!  (minus the whole catching a cold from my cousin part)

wearing  Pajamas.

loving  Michelle Obama’s Inauguration outfit.  Way to go Thom Brown.

laughing  At this hilarious video “How to Dance When You’re High on Life.”  It totally reminds me of all my favorite guy friends when we go to Dewey Beach.  Thanks to my friend Trey for sharing this.

wanting  To be able to breathe out of my nose.

needing  To get a lot of work done from home today, because we have a client coming into town tomorrow.

feeling  Extremely tired.  No matter how much sleep I get, I can’t seem to get enough.  Also, feeling very stuffy.

craving This Rebecca Minkoff Mini M.A.C.

clicking  I was featured on another leg wear website called Fashion Legwear for my ivory polka dot tights.  I was included with a group of bloggers for best leg wear of the week.  Scroll down about halfway, and you will find my pic.

What have you been up to lately?

Turquoise Tights

IMG_5851

These shots were taken last weekend before heading out to our little karaoke night.  So much fun by the way!  Mr. Biggs seriously has the BEST karaoke in the city in terms of talent.  Although your average Joe (ahem me) might be a little uncomfortable getting up there to sing after someone belts out “Diamonds” almost as good as Rihanna.  Seriously, I’m not lying.  This place has some amazing talent, and considering there is no cover charge, it’s like getting a free Broadway quality performance every time I go.  Fortunately, my girl Melissa and I don’t care if we aren’t as good as the rest.  We just say, “Even though we may not have quite the singing talent they do, we can sure put on a hell of a show!”

It’s FRIDAY!!!  And guess what that means?  GIRLS WEEKEND IN BROOKLYN!  The hubby is heading out of town after work today to hang with his college rugby buddies in DC, and my girls from Maryland are coming up for a Brooklyn weekend!  Yayy!  This will be the first true girl’s weekend since moving into our Brooklyn apartment (which has now been over a year).  So excited to get some quality girl time with good friends.

What are you up to this weekend?

My long time bestie, Meg, owns a house on the water in Pasadena, MD and I could not resist the opportunity for a photo op on this sunny day.  During my holiday break, Meg and I spent the night before making homemade pizza with friends and dancing the night away in Baltimore for another friend’s birthday.  The hubs and I stayed the night at her house, and we woke up in the morning to this beautiful view.  Thanks for having us Meg; we love you!

Outfit Photos by: Zack Notes

All other photos taken by me.

Fox Sweater: Old Navy (unfortunately sold out) – cute alternatives at ASOS, ModCloth, Dorothy Perkins and Peter Jensen / Red Coat: Tulle via Nordstrom / Chambray Button Down: GAP / Black Skinny Jeans: ZARA / Shoes: Nine West / Watch: Betsey Johnson / Buckle Bracelet: Wanderlust + Co. / Bow Bracelet: BaubleBar / Lip: Lancome Luxe

Don’t you just love this cute little fox?  I had to have this adorable sweater, even though they didn’t have my size.  A nice British tourist in the store convinced me that it would might “look cute a bit baggy,” and that was all I needed to hear before swooping it up.

My holiday break has been fantastic.  I can’t believe we have survived the “end of the world,” had an amazing Christmas, a fabulous family wedding, and that we are now into 2013.  Big thanks to my boss for giving me one more day off today to get my life together in NYC before going back to the office.  Here’s to unpacking, organization, and a work out for today to kick off the new year.  And if I get everything done today, then maybe I will treat myself to a little Les Mis tonight?  We shall see.

Gina

Seven Fishes

IMG_4512

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian Christmas celebration.  The dinner features seven different types of seafood and commemorates the wait, or vigil, for the midnight birth of the baby Jesus.  The most famous dish that Southern Italians are known for is baccala, or codfish.  Italians today also incorporate many other different types of seafood into their meal.

My family has been celebrating this tradition since before I can even remember.  What used to be a feast at my Grandparent’s house for many years has now moved to my Aunt and Uncle’s due to spacial reasons.  The family keeps growing!  Christmas Eve is a night that my cousins and I look forward to all year long.  It’s a time where the whole family is together, we drink delicious drinks, eat the best meal of the year, share gifts, and take our annual family photos.

This year was no different.  We shared many laughs, pumpkin martinis, cherry bomb spritzers, pesto rockfish, breaded baccala, escargot, clams, mussels, shrimp (ok so we had six, not seven, but close enough!), broccoli, garlic bread, the amazing corn pudding, brie, homemade cookies, awkward family photos, presents, and silliness.

I always hate departure time, but I was able to end the night knowing that we would be seeing everyone in less than a week for a family wedding before the new year!  Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

Buon Natale!
